Classroom Management Philosophy
My approach to classroom management is rooted in mutual respect, proactive engagement, and structured routines. I believe that a well-managed art studio is a safe environment where every student understands expectations, handles materials responsibly, and feels empowered to take creative risks.
1. Structure, Routines & Transitions
- The Studio Entry: Students enter the room calmly, check the board for the day's objective, and immediately head to their designated tables so instructional time is maximized.
The Attention Getter: To transition from active studio work to instruction, I use a consistent cue (such as a rhythmic clap or callback) to instantly gather the room's focus without raising my voice.
The Clean-Up Captains: We utilize a structured, 5-to-10-minute cleanup routine at the end of every period. Assigning specific "Studio Jobs" (table captains, supply managers, trash monitors) ensures the room is reset flawlessly for the next class.
2. Proactive & Positive Engagement
- Active Circulation: During studio time, I am constantly moving through the room—offering individual artistic guidance, building relationships, and redirecting off-task behavior before it escalates.
Celebrating Studio Citizenship: Highlighting positive behaviors and exceptional responsibility with materials creates a classroom culture where students take genuine pride in their workspace.
3. Clear, Consistent Expectations
- The Art Studio Rules: Focused on safety first, respecting peer creativity, and treating all art mediums with care.
Restorative Redirection: When behavior challenges arise, I use quiet, direct redirection and collaborative problem-solving, ensuring students can get back on track without disrupting the creative flow of the classroom.
4. Family & Community Collaboration
- Proactive Communication: I believe in sharing positive updates with families early and often, celebrating student achievements and growth in the studio.
The Studio Newsletter: Keeping parents and the school community connected by sharing highlights of current art projects, student gallery openings, and materials we are exploring.
